Cupolas and Weathervanes

Architectural accents have graced homes and public buildings for thousands of years. Weathervanes are no exception and are a great device for indicating wind direction. They come in all different designs, with animals, such as birds, dogs and horses or other objects that indicate religion or freedom.

In fact, current weathervane makers have the opportunity to both recreate the antique vanes of Europe and America and invent new sculptural forms, sometimes using non-traditional materials.

The weather vane has been a tradition on rooftops in this country since Colonial days. While the creations of earlier days were forged in blacksmith shops, today’s versions are created by true artisans from lightweight materials that allow for great detail. The results are weather vanes made from aluminum treated to look like forged iron and copper designs for the weather vane tops that are true works of art.

The weather vanes of past generations would most likely be sighted on the top of a barn. Modern uses include the tops of both homes and garages – as well as barns, of course. There are some that have been designed for placement in the garden. People looking for an alternative to the traditional yard fixtures such as bird baths, fountains and statues ought to consider this alternative: a beautifully done piece of metalwork that is an American icon.
