Cupola
- Hampton
Just
what is a “Cupola?” Reference materials
describe it as a noun derived from the
Latin word “cupula” meaning CUP. Further,
the Random House College Dictionary’s definition
is: cu.po.la (kyou’puh luh), noun. 1. Archit.
a. A light structure on a dome or roof,
serving as a belfry, lantern, or belvedere.
b. a dome, esp. one covering a circular
or polygonal area. 2. Any of various domelike
structures.
Cupolas have
been gracing the roofs of barns and houses for
over one hundred years. Cupolas are designed
to provide ventilation, allowing air to circulate,
while keeping rain and moisture outside of the
interior of your buildings. Cupolas are also
designed to be attractive and to make roofs more
interesting visually.
|
Cupolas are available in several
different styles and sizes so that you will have choices available
to you when you make your purchasing decision. One style which
you might want to consider is the Hampton.
A Hampton cupola resembles a miniature house.
The Hampton cupola starts with a square base. On this base, there
are louvers on
all four sides to allow air circulation.
These louvers look like window blinds. The Hampton cupola is topped
by a roof. You will
have the choice of a copper or aluminum roof
to finish off your Hampton copula.
To be more descriptive regarding Hampton cupolas,
they are “ornamental structures placed in a prominent position,
usually at the top of a larger roof or dome.” Hampton cupolas
are frequently placed on small buildings where, noticed on their
own, they serve the practical use of ventilation or as attractive
embellishments. When accessible from the inside, Hampton cupolas
may provide for a high vantage point from which to look out over
the surrounding area. The Hampton cupola, as used on a house,
garage, barn or stable, is somewhat unique because of its elongated
or rectangular form. While the Hampton cupola was first found
throughout the New England States and Virginia, it is now one
of the more popular cupola designs. |
